... so good. Despite some real horror stories about this receiver, I went ahead and purchased one, figuring if it went crazy within a month, I could simply return it and buy a more expensive model -- the price on this one was just too good to pass up!
I have owned two other Onkyo receivers, and am currently using the TX-SR 875 in my main room to power 7.1 speakers, which it has been doing for more than two years. The 875 puts out 140 watts per channel, and requires virtually the same setup as the 508. Therefore, setting up the 508 was simple for me since I had expended the time and effort on the 875 which, by the way, had to be replaced by the vendor because two of the channels on the first one delivered did not function. I have had the 508 in use as much as possible since it arrived. On the first day, it sputtered and cut out for a millisecond, and then the next day, it turned itself off for a length of time which required me to turn it back on. A reviewer pointed out that his 508 stayed hot even after turning it off. Same with mine, so I copied his prescription to cure that and plugged it into a separate power strip and turned that off when not using the 508. A couple of days later, I noticed that this receiver did not display that it was in Stand By mode when turned off, but showed that it was in HDMI Thru. I went into the Set-up under the last item, HDMI Set-up, and into HDMI Control and turned that off. Voila! Receiver shows on the front panel that it is in Stand By, and from then on the receiver cools rapidly after being turned off. Also, it does not run hot when it is on as it did before this procedure, just warm.
Additionally, this receiver has performed well in my secondary system in the bedroom where it powers 5.1 speakers, and does this with more than enough power in a room 11 by 15 feet. It sounds great with TV broadcasts, BD playback, CDs, and FM radio. It also picks up quite a few AM stations which I like to listen to late at night. Hopefully, this will go on long after this first week that I have had it. I will edit this review in a month or so.
